Those who frequent Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Library or the King Soopers store near the corner of U.S. 287 and Miramonte Boulevard have likely seen Gwen Nicodemus and her black Labrador puppy Bonita. The 5½-month-old pooch can often been seen in many public places around Broomfield sporting her green guide dog harness, as Nicodemus works to teach the dog proper behavior around people in preparation for a career as guide dog for the blind.
“We teach the puppies basic manners — sit, lie down, stay on the left side (of your owner) and don’t steal meat out of the meat rack at the grocery stores,” said Nicodemus, who is training her second guide dog puppy in the past two years.
Nicodemus is one of 16 active puppy trainers involved in the Boulder Guide Dog Puppies Club. A volunteer-run puppy training club affiliated with California-based nonprofit Guide Dogs for the Blind, Boulder Guide Dog Puppies is active across Boulder and Broomfield counties, according to club members.
